SERRA YILMAZ

i tradizionali yaprak sarmà

E a tavola?

E lei cosa risponde?
(ride) “E tu no”?

YAPRAK SARMA’

Ingredienti per 6 porzioni
500 gr di carne macinata
1 cipolla Tritata
1/2 mazzetto di prezzemolo tritato
1/3 di tazza di riso e bulgur
1 cucchiaio di concentrato di pomodoro
1/4 tazza di acqua calda
Succo di limone
Foglie fresche o in vasetto
Per la salsa
1/3 tazza di burro
2 cucchiai di concentrato di pomodoro
Preparazione
Chiudere i lati.
Servirli caldi.

Serra Yilmaz, extraordinary actress and a great chef.
Cinema, theater, her beloved Turkish cuisine and the original recipe of “yaprak sarmà”.

Serra Yilmaz, cult actress and “Muse” of director Ferzan Özpetek who always reserves a special space for her in his movies.I As soon as I meet Serra, I immediately followed in love with her foreign accent, the calm diction, the exquisite attention to the word to choose, the reassuring smile, the frank laugh and … her “gourmet” great passion for cooking and eating good food.

Hi Serra, let’s talk about your weekends. When you have time, where do you like to spend them?
Well, I live in three cities, Florence, Istanbul and Paris and so it depends on where I am. Destinations change, however I don’t like to go to too far a place, it would be too laborious a commitment and would not allow me to fully enjoy my hours of freedom. If I am in Florence, I could opt for Tuscany, Maremma or Donoratico to see the sea, because I always miss the sea … If I were to find myself in Istanbul, I would aim for the Black Sea on both the Asian and European sides, or the North Aegean , one of my favorite destinations.
What about when you are in Paris?
Since the TGV train goes so fast, I would head south-east to Alsace or the Landes where I find great wines and good food.
So you are an international gourmet… and what is your favorite dish?
Yaprak sarmà, a typical dish of Turkish cuisine: they are rolls in vine leaf. There are many types: with rice and olive oil with onion, pine nuts and raisins, or those with meat, covered with yogurt. They can be are served at different temperatures, I prefer them hot, cooked with lemon juice and almost unripe plums to get a certain acidity. Vine leaves are also important: the best are at the beginning of the season because they are more tender.
Do you cook them?
Rarely, they rarely require too much patience, but I love to eat them … especially if cooked by Mrs. Nergis, a dear friend from Istanbul who makes them just the way I like it.

Your first memory in the kitchen?
A ” sweet” memory … in fact, I loved helping my mom cook cakes and desserts.
And at the table?
I loved the cutlet of a piece of meat that my mom chose with great care from her trusted butcher and that she cooked to perfection. in a completely unique way..
You are a gay icon and loved by women, have you ever wondered why?
(smiles) Well you should ask them …
As for the “gay icon”, I am flattered, I think it is Özpetek’s work who often deals with these issues and does so with great grace and respect. Rearding the women… I really don’t know, however I want to tell you an anecdote that happens frequently, especially when I’m in Turkey. Sometimes it happens to me that there are men, usually of a certain age, who stop me on the street because they want to meet me, but then they stop and regularly slip on “my wife loves you” ...
And what do you answer?
(laughs) “Why, don’t you”?

Yaprak sarmà recipe

Ingredients for 6 servings
500 gr of minced meat
1 chopped onion
1/2 bunch of chopped parsley
1/3 cup of rice and bulgur
1 tablespoon of tomato paste
1/4 cup of hot water
Lemon juice
Fresh leaves or in a jar
For the sauce
1/3 cup of butter
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
Preparation
Place the leaves in a bowl filled with cold water. Rinse them, dry them and use them on the inside. To make the filling, put the meat, onion, bulgur, parsley, tomato, salt and pepper in a bowl. To add a pleasant slightly sour taste, add some lemon juice. Add 1/4 cup of hot water and mix well.
Place 4-5 whole vine leaves with the stem facing you, the shiny part on the bottom, take some of the filling and start rolling into cigar-shaped rolls. Close the sides. Line the pot with some torn leaves, you can also lay some almost unripe plums to get a certain acidity, as suggested by Serra, then lay the rolls, this will prevent the leaves from sticking to the bottom of the pot during cooking.
Boil the water, put another small bowl on the boiling water with 1 tablespoon of tomato paste and 1/4 of the butter, the butter will melt with the steam, then pour the boiling water into the mixture of pasta and butter , mix well, the water should be enough to cover stuffed leaves. Pour the sauce over the stuffed leaves. Place a plate on top of the leaves, to prevent them from floating or opening, cook over low heat, about 35 minutes. Take out the dish, serve with a thick yogurt and, if you like garlic, scented with fresh garlic.
Serve them hot.

Bologna: sleeping at Palazzo

FrancescaTolot

Francesca Tolot is probably as famous as the celebrities she’s worked on. Originally from Italy with a fine-arts background, Francesca had already made a name for herself in Europe working on powerhouse editorials for the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, before moving to Los Angeles and landing her first major job with none other than Madonna herself.

Ofra Cosmetics teamed up with ‘the one and only’ Francesca Tolot to bring a capsule collection which not only embodies Francesca’s style but gives makeup lovers the opportunity to really tap into their creative side…The rest, as they say, is history and her impeccable yet unique style made her one of the most sought after makeup artists in a very short amount of time.

LONDON Where to stay

Intercontinental a magnificent hotel in Phnom Penh

I had planned it all and planned it well. We arrived in Cambodia’s capital and enjoyed a 2-night stay at the Intercontinental a magnificent venue that isn’t in the touristic epicenter of Phnom Penh which would be close to the river, close to the Royal Palace, but actually it is rather central taking the city in its full scope. There are good things about staying at a hotel that is NOT particularly meant for tourists and that ISN’T in the touristic hub of town.

FANO, MARCHE REGION, ITALY Hotel Augustus & Hotel De la Ville

Planning your next Italian holidays? Fano is waiting for you…

Italy: Fano in the Marche Region, is the place where Roman and Renaissance histories blend with modernity and sweet life. From the Arch of Augustus to the Malatesta’s walls to the Roman Amphitheatre, to some peaceful beaches on the clear blue Adriatic Sea. In Fano you can also sample the local cuisine that offers a great choice of dishes.

The famous brodetto , sevred in the Restaurant LA LISCIA DA MR.ORI at the Augustus Hotel in Fano

What about fish?
A lot! From sea snails, molluscs, seafood, cooked in stew with tomato, mint and wild fennel or the stockfish cooked in abundant white wine, anchovy pesto, celery, carrots, onion, chilli, aromatic herbs, peeled tomatoes, black olives and potatoes and the iconic brodetto, a fish dish widespread in much of the Adriatic coast prepared in many different styles
Talking of brodetto, I stopped at the restaurant which has been awarded over the years as “Best Brodetto in Italy” and won again last year Fano Brodetto Festival. It’s called La Liscia da Mr.Ori , located in the premises of the 4 stars Augustus Hotel, an elegant venue in the center of Fano, boasting 22 rooms carefully prepared to welcome all year round guests from all over the world.

Milan, iconic Teatro Gerolamo hosts a spectacular collection of tin vintage toys and containers

Text and photos by Cesare Zucca

Milan
Atmospheres of a past time come to life in the exhibition at the Teatro Gerolamo , a little jewel , right in the heart of the City, The exhibit “Latta e molto altro The tin and much more”, is a beautiful collection of vintage toys that offers a collection of toys, boxes and tin plates, wooden toys and a particular section dedicated to war guns. A collection of 500 unique and original pieces, dating from the late ‘800 to the’ 60s, with which to retrace not only the evolution of taste, between aesthetics and functionality, but also the development of the Italian industry (from Saiwa to Venchi) which he entrusted the advertising of his products to decorated containers.

Among the boxes you can admire: the highly sought after Saiwa bins together with a version of the Saiwa box with a dedication by Gabriele D’Annunzio, some of the first Delser boxes dating back to 1905, the magnificent lithographs of the Lazzaroni amaretti di Saronno, Caffè Frank with Dutch extract Elefante, the Venchi, Mera & Longhi cylinders and many others. Among the great toy manufacturers: Günthermann, Lehmann, Gama, Kohler, INGAP and Bell, with the famous Also, Zulu, Tap Tap and Na-Nu signed by Lehmann, the splendid butterflies, together with the prestigious Charlot and a section of war cannons .

Unique pieces stand side by side with very common objects, which have now become a full part of the cultural and popular history of Italy, still present as furnishings and souvenirs in the homes of many families.
The boxes with their shapes and their style show the historical and cultural evolution that characterized Italian production abroad, together with the growth and expansion of large companies such as Lazzaroni, Delta, Saiwa, Baratti & Milani and Delser.

The plaques tell the birth of advertising as a fundamental ally of corporate sales growth, evolving into a real art form.
While the toys will make us reflect on their transformation. You will notice how from simple decorative objects, they will become fun companions designed and created for the entertainment of the little ones.

MILAN, PICCOLO TEATRO. An evening in Hell, Purgatory, Heaven… with legendary Colla’s marionettes

The idea of using marionettes to represent the words and images of Dante dates back a few decades, when at the end of the 80s Eugenio Monti Colla asked the then recently formed workshops to design and create the first materials for a possible staging. Now, four years on from his death, the Carlo Colla & Figli Company is finally staging this project. How is it possible to take on a work of such enormity and of a dimension totally out of scale with that of a marionette?

The Carlo Colla & Figli Company has started with this particular dimension, using the marionette as a unit of measurement not only for a matter of proportion, but also, and above all, for the evocative and metaphorical capacities of the small wooden actors, which are moved from a distance by the puppeteers and the writer, and which prove to be the true demiurges of an situation that exists and moves with a form of empathy that allows a reading of “our” reality from a safe distance. The marionette thus becomes the meter for understanding how to cut and reduce the original verses, which episodes to represent and which situations can be highlighted by this extremely particular form of theatrical language. The marionettes take the spectators by the land and lead them through the moments of Date’s Inferno, experiencing the atmosphere of Purgatory and finally ascending to Heaven, interpreted as an “apotheosis” typical of the most traditional of marionette plays.

As well as the writing of the scripts based on the notes by Eugenio Monti Colla, the new staging includes a score composed by Danilo Lorenzini, the creation of new sculptures, new marionettes and new costumes, and the study and creation of new sets, as well as an evolved study of the techniques of marionette movement, which also draws on characteristics and animation techniques from other forms of figure theatre, in a project that has involved the entire Company under the direction and project coordination of Franco Citterio and Giovanni Schiavolin.

The play has the support of the National Committee for celebrations surrounding the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, as part of the “Dante delle Marionette” project, which also provides for the exhibition “Le figure di Dante” at the MUTEF, the Museum of Figure Theatre in Milan and the figure theatre review “Dante in baracca”, organised in June/July at the Stabilimento Base located in the Ex-Ansaldo works.

A project created by Eugenio Monti Colla comes to life in the year of celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante. The marionettes are the protagonists in the fantastic voyage into the Afterlife as told by the supreme poet in the Divine Comedy.

MASCHILE SINGOLARE ( Masculine Singular) gets 4****

A little sweet and cool Italian movie made in just three weeks!
Let’s meet Antonio (Giancarlo Commare) who just broke up with his husband, With the support of his longtime friend, Cristina (Michela Giraud), Antonio moves to flamboyant Denis (Eduardo Valdarnini) and , aways passionate about pastry, starts working in Luca (Gianmarco Saurino),

Maschile Singolare tells of that moment of disturbance, change and wonder in the life of completely ordinary characters,. a 100 ‘film in just three weeks
Excellent cinematograohy, great soundtruck …
Directors Matteo Pilati and Alessandro Guida have signed an invisible direction, to never let the viewer “feel” the camera, nothing that could distract him from the narration of Antonio’s story., A story that spans from drama to comedy , always keeping the attention of the reality of a young gay generation.

Excellent cinematograohy, great soundtruck, remarkable cast.
I enthusiastically award Maschile Singolare with 4 stars….

Finally open! Spazio Teatro No’hma, the engine of the theater of the future.

The Spazio Teatro No’hma, by its innovative nature, wants to be the crossroads between past and future, transforming a theater that tells about static realities, into theatrical experiences that involve spectators, bringing them into a “new reality”.

Spazio Teatro No’hma celebrated the re-opening (obviously with the security restrictions due to Covid) with hosting the company Teatro Musica Novecento presenting “Invitation to the opera with crime”, not a real opera concert, but rather a theatrical piece that alternates famous arias with famous opera duets linked together by an exhilarating script. It ranges from Rossini to Verdi, from Puccini and Mascagni for a journey into melodrama presented with irony and suspense.

5 actors-opera singers in a vaudeville like rendition of famous arias, as soundtrack for a thriller-comc- drama that reminded me the glorious time of the operetta, a end of a century quite popular genre that assembled music, gigs, acting.

On stage the primadonna soprano Livia Farnese as the great soprano Galina (obviuosly with a strong russian accent) then the waitress, diva-wanna-be Silvia Felisetti and the 3 men of the story Antonio Colamorea, Alessandro Brachetti, Maurizio Leoni At the piano: Stefano Giaroli

Dedicated to No’hma ‘s founder Teresa Pomodoro , a “Zen Garden”, has been recently opened in Milan, as a livable space to hang with friends, children or your faithful dog

Thailand, Hua Hin Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas

by Phlilip Sinsheimer

Thailand.
After a few days in Hua Hin city,
I checked in for 2 nights at the Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas about 30 minute drive south in a super quiet locality called Pranburi. Even though unlucky with unexpected rain, the stay was just fantastic.

The villas are super spacious, comfortable and private.
Didn’t use the private pool to cool off from the sun, but after a long relaxing hot bath in the outdoor tub.

The food was awsome: just loved the breakfast buffet with various both Thaï and Western treats. Not the widest variety ever, but no one should be frustrated and everything was top notch. Who needs 90 items if half of them are disappointing. The à la carte menu of the restaurant with ocean view had me have the best Thaï food so far: true flavors with excellent ingredient sourcing. Loved the local Pranburi squid, partially sun dried for a great flavor and texture.

Killing time inside the villa, reading, watching TV, catching up with email left no time to boredom. The staff just couldn’t be nicer and professional.

Stepped out the resort to have a long walk along the ocean. The beach has been washed out on large portions, but discovered abot 7km South a beautiful beach.
Just outside the resort I had my favorite foot massage ever at Mali massage for a mere 300 Bahts. In the village great moment on a terrace with a Leo Beer and snacks.
Everyone in town seems relaxed and someone offered a free ride back to the hotel.
Loved that place.

ITALIAN ROCK STAR LOREDANA BERTÈ: “MY SECRET RECIPE TO CONQUER ANDY WARHOL …”

BY CESARE ZUCCA

New York. The “Queen of Rock” is transformed into “Pasta Queen” to conquer “the King of Pop Art”. Loredana Bertè and Andy Warhol, a “bomb” couple in the magical world of the Factory and Fiorucci.

Loredana in stile Warhol

Hi Loredana, the book “Caro Elio” dedicated to the great Fiorucci has just come out. You are there in many photos …
Basically I was the testimonial of Fiorucci’s store openings all over the world: Milan, where I often went with my sister Mimi, London, Los Angeles, New York where I lived for more than 1 year …
A moment you like to remember?
So many indescribable moments … maybe the press conference for the presentation of my first album. It took place in Milan, right in the Fiorucci offices in the Galleria Passerella. Elio had plastered the windows with my posters and gave everyone an amazing beach bag with a t-shirt and my album inside … I will never forget fans, journalists and record companies who were fighting for one

What was Elio Fiorucci like?
A unique, special, generous person … he filled my wardrobes with his things, I couldn’t wait to be able to wear them on some TV show or in my videos. I remember we were in London and Elio is divided to return after a couple of hours with a surprise. He went to Carnaby Street and brought me a dress made of handkerchiefs … a true work of art, Yes, he really loved me.
Speaking of Fiorucci New York, is it true that you met Andy Warhol there?
Of course, right in the Fiorucci Store on 59th Street. There I spent practically every afternoon there … it was an enchanted world, frequented by crazy VIPs: Grace Jones, Mick Jagger, Brooke Shield, Truman Capote, Jackie Onassis, Keith Haring … There was a wonderful coffee machine disguised as a organ and nobody knew how to use it … so I started it myself, I learned quickly and I was making fantastic cappuccinos, so much so that everyone mistook me for a “rock bartender”. One day Andy Warhol arrived and my dear friend Leonardo Pastore introduced us: “Andy, you absolutely must know Loredana, she is a great Italian rock star and a very good cook, she makes sensational pastas ,,,,”

Images from the book ?Caro Elio’ , Mondadori.

How did Warhol react?
Well, I must say that the fact of the rock star didn’t give a damn much … but he pricked up his ears when I heard about the pasta … “Tonight I have to make a contract with some Italian clients. Loredana, it would be great to let him find a real pasta ‘Made in Italy .’…”
In short, it was an invitation to the Factory! And do you think I was saying no ???
I immediately ran to the fantastic Bloomingdale’s shop and took them with everything and more, including the colander … and thank goodness, because then I realized that at the Factory no one knew about the colander’s existence, including Andy who took douzen of Polaroid of it…
How did your debut as a chef go?
A hit! … Andy nicknamed me “The Pasta Queen” and I’ve been back to the Factory many times. I spent a lot of afternoons there, I had my favorite corner sitting on a maxi version of the Campbell Tomato Soup can, but an original, not a copy …. I swear to you, it didn’t seem real … Meanwhile my fame as a chef it had spread and I liked to surprise the friends of the Factory by cooking delicious dishes. One of my top recipes was beer chicken with baked potatoes, very simple, but everyone was crazy about it …

Then my friends started calling me, from Elsa Martinelli to Tito and Leonardo Pastore, to Dan Munroe, the director of the video clip for my song “Movie”. One of my top recipes was beer chicken with baked potatoes, very simple, but everyone was crazy about it … We had dinner and then we got glamorous to go to Studio 54.

A nice experience? Yes! Playing the role of “Queen of Pasta” was an unforgettable experience, in addition to eschange the courtesy, Andy wanted to collaborate in the creation of the video clip for my song “Movie” with images of New York that he took at night and Christopher Makos, great photographer of the Factory, made the cover photo of my Made in Italy album, a beautiful black and white close-up.

Dear “Pasta Queen”, would you like to return to the throne and give us the recipe for one of your ‘seductive’ dishes …
(laughs) Of course: it’s a very simple and fragrant dish: spaghetti with tuna and fresh cherry tomatoes …

SPAGHETTI BERTÈ WITH TUNA AND CHERRY TOMATOES

La ricetta di Loredana Bertè

Ingredients
360 g of spaghetti
160 g of tuna in oil
20 cherry tomatoes
3 cloves of garlic
Origan, Parsley

Preparation
Peel the garlic and fry it in a pan with oil. Add a generous pinch of dried oregano. Add the tuna and mash it with a fork to crumble it. After 5 minutes, remove the garlic from the pan, season with salt and add the cherry tomatoes that you have cut in half. Arrange them all in the pan with the cut side facing down. Put the lid on and let it go for about 15 minutes. Attention: the oil must not fry, but only transmit heat and let the cherry tomatoes dry. Add a generous spoonful of chopped parsley and a small piece of chilli. Cook for 5 minutes, over low heat and with the lid on, stirring several times. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in plenty of salted water, drain when al dente and mix with the sauce. Sauté them for a few moments over high heat and then let them rest for a minute before serving.

SOPHIA IS… SOPHIA, EVEN WHEN DIRECTED BY HER SON…

By Cesare Zucca (italian and english version)

Ieri notte ho visto The Life Ahead, il nuovo film con Sophia Loren

(Premio Cesar)

(english version)
Last night I saw The Life Ahead, Sophia Loren‘s new movie
Regarding the film, it seemed mediocre to me. The troubled past of Madame Rosa (Loren) is rather sketched Sophia (whose role is almost reduced to supporting actress, since the boy is more present in the scenes) is well presented but, in my opinion, not incisive.
I expected more ….
Mediocre direction. If you ask me for a scene that has particularly stuck in my mind, I find it hard to answer.
Even the scene of the terrace with the laundry hanging, (which the director said was intended as a tribute to A particular day by Scola) seemed mediocre to me: the movements of the rooms were rather static
All in all, little emotion (perhaps how is Edoardo Ponti’s character, at least, while directing?).
Pausini’s song (which starts well but then shrill ‘scallops’) didn’t convince me,
Same ipression for the whole film, which seems long, slow and filled of useless moments,

The Loren make-up (by the great Frederique Foglia, that of Apocalypse) left me doubtful … The heavy and approximate eyeliner line and the fake eyelashes (typical of Loren) wanted to indicate what the a protagonist used to wear in his youth? … or am I simply a wrong choice?
I repeat: (not because the hairstylist Enzo Angileri is friend): the thing I found most appropriate was Sophia’s hairstyle, Enzo told me that I he was inspired by the famous kitchen scene in previous Loren’s movie Marriage Italian Style , Bravo Enzo!

Sophia is ….. Sophia! Although directed by her son, she manages to emerge and has point to the heart.
My favorite line? Perhaps the most temperamentally Sophia: When Rosa negotiates the monthly amount to host Momo. “I want 800, I’ll give you 700, that’s fine 750, two weeks maximum ,,,,,”

MY VOTE: 6

At this point I want to review the original film by Moshé Mizrahi – which was released in 1977 and was awarded an Oscar – in the center, Simone Signoret’s Madame Rosa. (Cesar Award)

DRESDEN, GERMANY : DISCOVERING A JEWEL

Today I am taking you to Germany, in the heart of Saxony, where you will discover Dresden, a jewel of medieval origins, lying on the banks of the Elbe River. A city whose architectural beauties, splendid views and romantic views made the Italian painter Bernardo Bellotto fall in love, also known as Canaletto who lived there and painted it.

Wonders of history, art and … cuisine, washed down with excellent local wine and enlivened by quarkkäulchen, the most traditional Saxon sweets.
Ready for the trip? Let’s go ...

The Zwinger, a spectacular architectural complex in Baroque style, a triumph of fountains, swimming pools, sculptures and museums.
– Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection)
– Hall of Arms

.Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, a gallery full of masterpieces by Mantegna, Tintoretto, Velàzquez, Dürer, Titian, Rembrandt and many other masters of European art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The most famous painting in the gallery is the Sistine Madonna by Raphael (1512-1513), at the feet of which the two famous thoughtful angels stare.

–The Cathedral and the Clock Tower
– Frauenkirche church
– Brühlsche Terrasse
– Neustadt (New Town)
– Kunsthofpassage, Funnel Wall and many trendy cafes
– Semperoper (Opera House)

Where to drink the excellent Saxon wines

Numerous wine bars in the city, including Lingner Terrassen, Lutz Müller, while in nearby Radebeul you con find Karl Friedrich Aust, Drei Herren, Hoflössnitz and the splendid vineyard of Castello Wackerbarth which produces one of my favorite whites: the Golden Riesling vintage 2019.

The irresistible quarkkäulchen!
Who writes them with ‘and’ who with ‘ä’, who says that the original recipe includes quark cheese, from which they take their name, who instead claims that the main ingredient is ricotta … It’s a thousand-year dispute … I’m talking about quarkkäulchen. A kind of pancakes made with potatoes, eggs, cheese, raisins, sugar and a twist of orange peel, strictly served with apple purée.

Where to eat them?
Discover Pfund’s Molkerei, a historic Neo-Renaissance-style dairy, dated 1880,
A magical place, covered with tiles painted with bucolic scenes, and full of fine cheeses.
Not to be missed!

WHERE TO SLEEP
I stayed in the Am Terrassenufer hotel, very close to the Castle. Comfortable, welcoming, excellent breakfast and spectacular sunset views over the city spiers the amazing sunset over the City.

“IN THE HEART OF MUSIC” VERONA SUMMER 2020: THE MAGNIFICENT ARENA IS CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF YOUR HEART

With an impressive all-Italian cast on the inaugural night of July 25th and great international stars for the month of August, with gala events and symphony concerts, the 2020 Summer Festival at the Arena di Verona is ready to start with its new format with an in-the-round (central) stage and reduced seating capacity, but stimulated by the desire to support the revival of the local area, under the banner of quality and the age-old tradition that have made it world-famous.
It is thanks to this spirit of safeguarding artistic quality that the sponsors, starting with major partner Unicredit, have confirmed their commitment, making this edition feasible, in spite of the serious penalization of ticket sales.
Following months of continuous commitment to avoid the Arena being silent in this difficult year for the cultural sector, the Arena season is finally starting again with a new stage set-up that makes this edition truly historic and unrepeatable. On 25th July the 2020 Summer Festival “In the heart of the Music” begins with a great tribute to Italian art and artists: Francesco Meli, Saimir Pirgu, Fabio Sartori, Roberto Aronica, Fabio Armiliato, Barbara Frittoli, Eleonora Buratto, Luca Salsi, Leo Nucci, Daniela Barcellona, Michele Pertusi, and Katia Ricciarelli for a total of 31 all-Italian artists. The inaugural evening is set to be a tribute to the wounded country of Italy, its great bel canto tradition, the quality of its great school, whose solidity was put to the test by the challenges imposed by the pandemic. Fondazione Arena di Verona therefore wants to give a very strong message of hope by means of art, with a moral and aesthetic initiative, which just had to originate in the world’s largest open-air theatre.

OPERA WILL LOVE YOU!
on August 13th, a unique event is scheduled at the Arena: Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the eagerly awaited return of young Veneto violinist Giovanni Andrea Zanon along with the Arena Orchestra’s strings.
Then on 21st August, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi will be staged in semi-scenic form, an opera never staged at the Arena, with Leo Nucci in the leading role. Then no less than two appointments with icon Plácido Domingo, a milestone in the Arena program, firstly with a show on August 28th in which he will be the undisputed star performer alongside the beautiful Spanish voice of Saioa Hernández supported by Saimir Pirgu, then on the conclusive night of 29th August, with the international diva Sonya Yoncheva and Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo. Then, on 31st July an absolute “first” follows, with Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Marco Armiliato with Vittoria Yeo, Sonia Ganassi, Saimir Pirgu and Alex Esposito, in an ideal bow to the numerous victims of the pandemic and their families. On Saturday 1st August, Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Ekaterina Gubanova and Ambrogio Maestri will be on the Arena’s huge central stage in what will be a true celebration of re-birth in the name of art, returning to breath that international creative inspiration that has always made the Arena a goal for fans from all over the world.
On Friday 7th August on the other hand things starts to look ahead, to the star-studded 2021 edition, with a unique all-Wagnerian gala with a view to the debut of Jonas Kaufmann and his promise to partially bring back the great Leipzig composer to the Arena stage, a truly historic rarity.
For the Verdi and Puccini galas, on August 8th and 22nd August, Daniel Oren and Andrea Battistoni will make a welcome return to the podium and singers will include the great tenor Marcelo Alvarez. Between these prestigious nights, on 14th August, the programme includes an important gala dedicated to Rossini – a real innovative feature – whose protagonist will be soprano Lisette Oropesa, an esteemed singer of Rossini repertoire, young South African tenor Levy Sekgapane, baritones Alessandro Corbelli and Marco Filippo Romano and bass Roberto Tagliavini, with Jader Bignamini on the podium.
