“The psychic sphere, the surreal, the subconscious and metaphysical feelings unrelated to the conditioning of awareness” thus notes Max Ernst, German painter, sculptor, poet and theorist of art and celebrated at Palazzo Reale Milano with a spectacular retrospective, the first in Italy .

.The Angel of the Hearth alludes to the terrible catastrophe that was about to fall in 1939. A condor with a pointed beak bristling with sharp teeth becomes a symbol of a Europe drunk with blood, which will transform its children into monstrous entities.

A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe. He had no formal artistic training, but his experimental attitude toward the making of art resulted in his invention of frottage—a technique that uses pencil rubbings of textured objects and relief surfaces to create images—and grattage, an analogous technique in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath.

Max Ernst was a provocateur, a shocking and innovative artist who mined his unconscious for dreamlike imagery that mocked social conventions. These charged sentiments directly fed into his vision of the modern world as irrational, an idea that became the basis of his artwork. Ernst’s artistic vision, along with his humor and verve come through strongly in his Dada and Surrealists works

Max Ernst era un provocatore, un artista scioccante e innovativo che scavava nel suo inconscio immagini oniriche che deridevano le convenzioni sociali. Questi sentimenti carichi alimentarono direttamente la sua visione del mondo moderno come irrazionale, un’idea che divenne la base della sua opera d’arte. La visione artistica di Ernst, insieme al suo umorismo e alla sua verve, emerge con forza nelle sue opere dadaiste e surrealiste

Artista prolifico, Ernst è stato uno dei principali pionieri del movimento Dada e del Surrealismo in Europa. Non aveva una formazione artistica formale, ma il suo atteggiamento sperimentale nei confronti della creazione artistica ha portato alla sua invenzione del frottage, una tecnica che utilizza lo sfregamento a matita di oggetti testurizzati e superfici in rilievo per creare immagini, e grattage, una tecnica analoga in cui la pittura viene raschiata su tela per rivelare le impronte degli oggetti posti sotto.

L’Angelo del focolare allude alla immane catastrofe che stava per piombare, nel 1939, Un  condor con il becco appuntito e irto di denti aguzzi diviene simbolo di una Europa, , ebbra di sangue, che trasformerà  i propri figli in entità mostruose.
