Last night a succesfull Italian debut of “The Great Gatsby – The Show” is a vibrant dance-theatre adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic 1925 novel. Created by acclaimed Catalan choreographer Enrique Gasa Valga and his international company, the production brings the lavishness and tragedy of the Roaring Twenties to the stage through contemporary dance, cinematic set design, and live music.

Enveloped in wealth, mystery, and lavish festivities, Jay Gatsby is portrayed here as a tragic figure, blinded by a romantic illusion that never truly existed. His world of excess and superficiality crumbles to the rhythm of swing and jazz across twenty meticulously crafted scenes, through which Gasa Valga builds a precise, dynamic, and profoundly human visual narrative.

The show features an on-stage live swing and jazz band whose soundtrack blends original arrangements by Roberto Tubaro with classic jazz and soul standards, enhanced by live vocalists. Iconic tracks range from “What a Difference a Day Makes”, “Sing, Sing, Sing”, “My Baby Just Cares for Me”, and “Bang Bang” to a poignant rendition of “Ne Me Quitte Pas” and a highly distinctive interpretation of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Masterpieces of jazz seamlessly intertwine with fresh compositions, brought to life by the evocative vocals of Greta Marcolongo and an exceptional instrumental ensemble.

Gasa Valga merges classical ballet fundamentals with expressive contemporary movement and theatrical mime, creating a dynamic, visually arresting atmosphere reminiscent of 1920s cinema. By relying almost entirely on the narrative language of body movement, lighting, and soundscape, the production achieves a universal accessibility that transcends language barriers.

While those unfamiliar with Fitzgerald’s novel might find certain narrative nuances a bit elusive, the intricacies of the plot ultimately take a back seat. The sheer allure of the choreography—and, above all, the captivating performances of an exceptional cast led by a charismatic Locke Venturato as Gatsby and Camilla Danesi as Daisy—delivers an immersive theatrical experience.

Enhanced by Birgit Edelbauer-Heiss’s glamourous, period-accurate costuming and opulent scenography, the production sweeps the audience directly into the wild, dazzling world of Gatsby’s legendary parties.

On stage at Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber till October 25, 2026
