Chi era Man Ray?
Nato Emmanuel Radnitsky diventa Man Ray (“Man” da “Manny”, il suo soprannome, e “Ray” raggio di luce. Man Ray è senza dubbio uno dei grandi protagonisti dell’arte del XX secolo.
Fu uno dei primi a utilizzare la fotografia come un vero e proprio medium creativo, realizzando opere emblematiche che sono entrate a far parte della storia dell’arte del Novecento.

La mostra ospita più di 300 opere tra fotografie vintage, negativi, collage, litografie, oggetti, film — un viaggio che parte da Philadelphia (1890), passa per New York, sbarca a Parigi negli anni ’20, intreccia arti, sogni, provocazioni.

Scoprirete autoritratti,nudi, ipnotiche solarizzazioni che rovesciano luce e ombra e ritratti degli amici intellettuali tra cui Duchamp, Cocteau e Kiki de Montparnasse musa, amante, performer. e le sue opere iconiche come Noire et blanche, Le Violon d’Ingres.

E poi i suoi film d’avanguardia: Emak Bakia, Les Mystères du Château de Dé e l’imperdibile Retour à la raison, mini capolavoro di 3 minuti che ancora oggi sembra avveniristico.

Le magie di Ray sfidano la normalità: le rayografie non solo una tecnica, ma una filosofia, dove l’oggetto quotidiano appoggiato su carta fotosensibile diventa protagonista senza senza usare la macchina fotografica. Immagini talora astratte, ma ricche di pura poesia visiva.

Who was Man Ray?
Born Emmanuel Radnitsky, he became Man Ray — “Man” from “Manny,” his nickname, and “Ray” meaning a beam of light. Man Ray is undoubtedly one of the great protagonists of 20th-century art.
He was among the first to use photography as a true creative medium, producing emblematic works that have become part of the history of modern art.

The exhibition features over 300 works — vintage photographs, negatives, collages, lithographs, objects, and films — a journey that begins in Philadelphia (1890), moves through New York, lands in Paris in the 1920s, and intertwines art, dreams, and provocations.

Visitors will discover self-portraits, nudes, hypnotic solarizations that invert light and shadow, and portraits of his intellectual friends, including Duchamp, Cocteau, and Kiki de Montparnasse — muse, lover, and performer — as well as his iconic works such as Noire et blanche and Le Violon d’Ingres

Then there are his avant-garde films: Emak Bakia, Les Mystères du Château de Dé, and the unmissable Retour à la raison, a three-minute mini-masterpiece that still feels futuristic today.

Ray’s magic defies normality: his “rayographs” are not just a technique but a philosophy, where everyday objects placed on photosensitive paper become protagonists without the use of a camera. The resulting images are sometimes abstract, yet full of pure visual poetry.

The retrospective Man Ray – Forms of Light, will be open from September 24, 2025, to January 11, 2026, at Palazzo Reale in Milan.
